Like a drug peddler they are concerned more with the spread of your own service than the well being of your patron. This, I'm afraid, is absolutely true and evident in the many relationships tarnished by such service, and the amount of good time it consumes. Ultimately I see Facebook as a trend, a flash in the pan craze. Real communication happens in real time. Anything else is borderline stagecraft.

I philosophically disagree with the purpose and supposed value of Facebook as a communicating tool. I think inhibitions are good, in general, to the well being of any interactive society, and Facebook unfortunately destroys these. I am also disposed to degree with the inability to terminate one's own account. Your agency makes it terribly difficult to discontinue the use of.
