This is my guess...
There are two types of basic magnetism used in this video. One is the magnetism in magnents, and the other is electromagnetism that is produced in a field around any operating electrical device. The person who descovered this was Hans Christian Oersted. The 9V battery creates electromagnetism in the magnet to enhance the magnetic field of them, making the magnets more efficient.
