I don't know which exact book, but after the 4th Age I believe it is, Morgoth finds some way to break free of his prison, and he destroys the Sun and the Moon, and summon all his old allies and servants, such as the Balrogs and Sauron. Then the Valar, and heroes of man like Beren and Turin fight against him, and eventually Turin stabs Morgoth and kills him, and avenges the Children of Hurin.

I would say Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs, was Morgoth's left hand. And yes, Morgoth is indeed alive. He's a prisoner in the void.
