I love the mix of comments to this song - for me the mix of discussion about politics and song is what I hope Paul Robeson would have appreciated. When democracy is such a delicate thing I think we must all try to make it better all the time. If you like this song please vote (and for whoever your conscience tells you to). lol

I can't understand that remark
Why dose it sound strange that a communist will be revered for his support of the workers. Communism is all about the working people and making there life better. So it stands to reason that a communist will care about the working class. If he was a hungry powered capitalist who was revered for his support of the workers, that would be strange.

Paul Robeson was one of the great 20th Century martyrs of the working class. Growing up in a coal and steel town, he was revered for his support of the workers, even if he did, misguidedly support Communism for a while. But the real tragedy in his life was his being misunderstood by hos own people in America. Perhaps one day they will understand his gift for them.

divaesq: Thank you for this explanation. I had only been able to get back to Dvorak's New World Symphony and William Arms Fisher but didn't know about the Scots-Irish. The song has been a part of my life all my life. In my old age I started wondering where it came from. It is so heart rendering. Again, thank you. |
