This song is in 3/4 time, which is a waltz. You don't count 1234, you count 123, 123, 123. Another cool timing is called an "abbreviated waltz": 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2. The last beat is dropped (abbreviated). Technically there are 8 beats (3+3+2), so you can drum regular to it but it has a unique feel. Check Nick Drake's songs Pink Moon and Northern Sky. Also, check System of a Down's Ariels: 3+3+3+3+4 = 16 beats.
