Literally it means "god out of the machine".
The name comes from the machines (cranes etc.) that were used in ancient Greek theaters to let gods fly on the stage.

The deus ex machina was any device, god or person that in ancient Greek drama suddenly appeared out of nothing to clear up a mess, help the hero or solve an unsolvable problem. If you want, the deus ex machina is the "cheapest" trick to bring stories with plot holes to an otherwise impossible end or make them continue.
Think of weapons lying around in impossible places, so that the hero can defend himself, new characters that suddenly appear and give the story a silly twist etc.

i hope they dont fuck it up like number 2, dont get me wrong...it wasnt a bad game, but it didnt have the same atmosphere, story, etc... as the first deus ex, which still is the best game ever made for me. they should certainly implement a skill system like the first deus ex

That is very unsimilair... :S

I know its Latin, but i remember on the back of some book or maybe even a game it said it meant ''God's Machine'' Also loosely meaning ''Earth'' referring to it as Gods machine or experiment. Its widely unsimilair to the actual meaning. Thought it was interesting. :)

Deus Ex Machina means God from a Machine... it's Latin
moshmachine (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
I thought Deus Ex meant ''Gods Machine'' in some sort of variation? |
