Didn't this happen during the Great Depression when people decided to invest in gold rather than keep their money in US Currency? The government simply took it back from the investors in the form of a compulsory purchase. If the system you depend on is completely corrupt in the first place you can't beat it.

Personally, I wish we could go back on the gold standard. Unfortunately, we're pretty much screwed for that.
